Bali airport open but Aussies grounded

Bali's airport is open but most Australians won't be flying today, with both Jetstar and Virgin Australia deeming it still unsafe.

Both airlines have cancelled all Bali flights due to the ash cloud from Mt Barujari, even though the airport at Denpasar was reopened yesterday afternoon.

In a statement on its Facebook page, Jetstar said, "the ash cloud is still too close for us to fly safely to and from Australia".

The airline told disappointed customers: "This is partly because we can't say for sure where the ash cloud will be several hours from now - which is how long it will take any of our aircraft to get to Bali".

On its Facebook page, Virgin Australia made the same call.

"The latest advice from the Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre in Darwin as well as our team of meteorologists is that conditions are still unsafe to fly."

Both carriers were due to update their advice for Saturday flights this morning.

Bali airport management reopened the facility at 2.30pm local time on Thursday, saying the ash from the volcano on Lombok island was no longer blowing toward Bali.

However, they had to spend several hours cleaning the runway and aircraft of ash before any flights could take off or arrive.
