Milat to be jailed for axe murder

Matthew Milat will be sentenced today for the axe murder of a friend in the same forest where his great-uncle slayed seven backpackers in the early 1990s.

Milat and Cohen Klein, both 19, have pleaded guilty in the NSW Supreme Court to murdering David Auchterlonie on his 17th birthday.

The victim was attacked with an axe on November 20, 2010, in the Belanglo State Forest, the same NSW Southern Highlands place where Ivan Milat murdered the backpackers.

Klein recorded the murder on his phone and chilling audio of David sobbing and begging "don't do this to me" was played at the pair's sentencing hearing last month.

Crown prosector Lloyd Babb SC said the teenagers were motivated by the adrenalin rush of a "thrill kill".

They will be sentenced by Acting Justice Jane Mathews.
