The University of Otago’s three-storey commerce building will be in the shadow of Dunedin’s tallest crane for the next five months.

The 100m Waikouiati Engineering-owned crane would work at  a height of up to 80m  removing glass roofing from the building.

Crane operator Dave Morgan said the $2.5million crane had also been used in the University of Otago Portobello marine laboratory and aquarium project.

The crane operator of 30 years said operating the giant crane came with unique challenges.

"I have to watch the weather.

"I have to shut it down if it gets too windy."

The $17million redevelopment of the building was expected to be completed by the middle of next year.
