About 300 people took part in a protest at the University of Otago campus this afternoon against planned cuts to the humanities division.
The protesters, many wearing red, gathered on the steps opposite the Clocktower ahead of a university council meeting.
Tertiary Education Union president Dr Sandra Grey, Cr Aaron Hawkins and students spoke at the protest, and called for the university to rethink job cuts.
The protesters would hand over a petition to members of the university council at 2pm.
Staff cuts were proposed for the anthropology and archaeology, English and linguistics, history, languages and cultures, and music departments.
