One person is dead and another seriously injured after a crash on State Highway 1 in Canterbury this morning.
Main South Rd was blocked after the two-vehicle crash near Burnham was reported to emergency services just before 7.30am.
Fire and Emergency NZ said three crews responded to the crash, and arrived to find two people trapped in separate vehicles.
Initially it was reported that both had been freed, and a St John spokesperson this morning said one person had been airlifted to hospital in a serious condition.
In an update this afternoon police advised the other person had died at the scene.
The highway was closed for several hours but has now reopened.
The police serious crash unit was notified.
