Identical twins admitted to the Bar last week could spell double trouble for judges.

Alexandra and Sara Isherwood (23) were sworn in at the High Court in Nelson on Friday after earning law degrees from the University of Otago.

They graduated from Otago University on May 10, Alexandra with a bachelor of laws degree with honours (second class, division 1), and Sara with a bachelor of laws.

Sara said she was delighted to finally become a fully-fledged lawyer after all the hard work she had done.

Sara and Alexandra are the first in their family to become lawyers and agreed they could not have done it without each other's support.

"Some mornings at university, one of us used to sleep in and the other would go to the lectures to get the notes," Sara said.

"It was great because no-one was any the wiser."

However, Alexandra said pretending to be each other was not going to be possible in their workplace.

"We can't do that because we both specialise in different aspects of the law."

Both are working in Christchurch, Alexandra in commercial law at Anderson Lloyd, and Sara in litigation with Duncan Cotterill on a different floor of the same building.

Sara said staff in the building often confused them, especially when riding in the lift or when the sisters visited each other.

"Other people get embarrassed, but it's a great source of entertainment for us."
