They were issued during a junior tackle clinic at Forsyth Barr Stadium yesterday as part of an initiative launched by Otago Community Rugby and its new sponsor, Port Otago.
In the coming days, mouthguards will be provided to all junior rugby players across the province.
Otago Rugby community manager Warren Kearney said the organisation was ‘‘really grateful’’ to Port Otago for supporting junior rugby players.
‘‘Helping young players get into the habit of wearing mouthguards early on is an important part of keeping them safe on the field and putting player welfare first.’’
Port Otago chief executive Kevin Winders said it was an excellent safety initiative that benefited young people out enjoying their sport.
‘‘Many of our kaimahi have children who play rugby, so it’s also a great way to support them and our wider community.’’
