Dunedin motorcyclist Jaydon Millar Tackney (21) was killed in a collision with a car in Waldronville on Monday.
Friends and family have paid tribute to him on social media.
Bystanders performed CPR on Mr Tackney after hearing the crash on Brighton Rd, but he died at the scene.
The death was one of 48 involving a motorcyclist or pillion passenger this year.
That was up from 46 at the corresponding period last year, and 39 at the corresponding period in 2017.
Mr Tackney’s death also followed a spate of crashes earlier this month, including one weekend where four motorcyclists and one cyclist were killed.
A total of 52 motorcyclists died in crashes last year.
District road policing manager Senior Sergeant Paula Enoka said that was a statistic nobody wanted to see.
Motorists needed to actively check for motorcycles and other road users, she said.
‘‘We know motorbikes can be harder to see when driving, so we ask drivers to look twice at intersections and before changing lanes.
‘‘The important thing to remember as a motorcyclist is that when crashes occur you are vulnerable — so it's important to wear a helmet, be alert, be visible, and drive to the conditions.
‘‘An unsafe manoeuvre, or going too fast for the conditions, could have tragic consequences.’’

Why not start with the reporting of not only ‘the accident/fatality’ but then following that up later with what went wrong and any ‘lessons to learn’ from them. I am often baffled with the reporting of vehicle accidents without any following information about the findings, this could be so helpful in terms of Road user education.
