Boat scare prompts call to police

A precautionary alert involving an unoccupied dinghy at Karitane this morning was called off after the owner was found safe and well in Dunedin, police said.

A police spokeswoman said a member of the public saw the dinghy off the Huriawa peninsula and alerted police at 10.50am.

The person had seen the dinghy earlier in the day and thought someone was on board, so when they saw the craft later with no-one in it they contacted police.

The owner of the craft, which was moored, was traced, and an alert for police, Search and Rescue and Coastguard Dunedin was called off, the spokeswoman said.
