A young child was left alone by his daycare group after a visit to the Woodhaugh Gardens this afternoon.

Police were called to the gardens in Dunedin at 2pm by members of the public who found the young boy by himself.

A police media spokeswoman said police returned the young boy to the daycare centre without any issues.

No other details about the child or the daycare centre were available, she said.

A woman who was in the gardens at the same time, posted on social media saying she saw the boy's daycare group leave and soon noticed the boy had been left behind.

She and others stayed with the boy but he had nothing on him which could identify him or the daycare centre he attended.

She said police arrived about an hour after the boy was first spotted.
