Workers begin placing beams across the State Highway 1/Caversham Valley Rd northbound carriageway at Lookout Point last night.
New Zealand Transport Agency project team manager Simon Underwood said it was a ''key step'' in bridge construction there, but added there was still ''quite a way to go''.
Once finished, the bridge will cross the highway, connecting Riselaw Rd and Mornington Rd. Twelve beams would be laid this week, and another 12 in ''about a month'', Mr Underwood said.
