Miss Hutchison said she planned to study archaeology and forensic science at the university next year.
She had considered plans to study at the university for a few years, but the open day had helped her make the decision, she said.
She planned to live in a hall of residence.
A University of Otago spokeswoman said about 6000 high school pupils from throughout New Zealand attended the open day.
Prospective students were offered presentations by all departments, campus tours and an address by vice-chancellor Prof Harlene Hayne.
