North Dunedin is still largely empty of students, but the University of Otago's Campus Watch is keeping a careful eye on the area for opportunist thieves.

Deputy proctor Andrew Ferguson said up to six Campus Watch members were working in shifts over the summer break and they were always kept busy.

''Unfortunately, it is ... a time when members of the criminal fraternity wander the streets, targeting unoccupied flats.

''Our staff are always alert and keep a keen eye out for these people and work closely with the police,'' Mr Ferguson said.

Staff frequently checked flats listed with the university as being unoccupied.

''From time to time, we come across suspicious activity, such as opportunist theft, and we work closely with the police to resolve such matters quickly.''

Aside from protecting property, Campus Watch members enjoyed spending time with visitors to the campus.

They also enjoyed the opportunity to meet the area's permanent residents.
