Sitting under a huge sky, the Sutton Railway Station opened in 1891 and closed in 1986, but was retained for tourist trains. Etched into the timber weatherboards of the station are the names and initials of soldiers from the area who served in World War 1, carved as they left for the front. Among these are the initials of Arthur Charles Peat, a member of the Otago Infantry

Battalion, who left Sutton in late 1914 with other local men. Mr Peat was killed in action at Gallipoli in August 1915.
