A series of changes to bus routes and stops in the tertiary education area of Dunedin should be ready soon after students flood back to the city next year.
Construction work for the planned Albany St connection project is due to happen in the summer months, when many students leave town.
Design concepts feature construction of a separated cycleway from the harbour shared path to the city’s State Highway 1 one-way-traffic routes.
The changes will provide an opportunity to improve public transport in the area, Otago Regional Council transport manager Doug Rodgers has said.
"We will work on moving and adding some new, more modern stops, as well as modifying some routes slightly."
Among planned changes is setting up a bus interchange in Union St.
A new stop could be added outside Forsyth Barr Stadium and another stop created across the road beside Logan Park.
Buses are expected to take a direct route in and out of the university precinct, using Albany St and Union St.
An existing stop in Albany St could be extended.
Bus stops in Clyde St, Forth St and Union St could be removed.
The Albany St connection project is part of the Shaping Future Dunedin Transport package, which was developed by the Dunedin City Council, Otago Regional Council and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency.
The package was designed to offset traffic disruption associated with construction of the new Dunedin Hospital in the central city.
Public feedback about the Albany St Connection is to be considered before the final form of the project proceeds.
The feedback period on the concept ends on June 20.
When development of shared paths and cycleways is complete, the tertiary area will be linked up with the city centre, the State Highway 1 cycle lanes and the shared path and cycleway stretching from Port Chalmers to Portobello.
