A bevy of University of Otago residences will be given brand new monikers.

Several houses at Arana College were only known by their street address, but yesterday the university council agreed to a recommendation to name them after native trees.

The houses will be known as Kauri, Pohutukawa, Kanuka, Manuka, Totara, Ponga, Ti Kouka, Rimu, Kahikatea and Tawahi.

Pictured showing off the newly named Totara house are (from left) students Jasper O’Kane, assistant warden Sara Colombo and student Leilani Jones.
