University of Otago Dentistry school head Paul Brunton has been appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the Division of Health Sciences.

He replaces Professor Peter Crampton, who announced last year he would step down this year after 7-1/2 years in the role, and as Dean of the Medical School.

Prof Brunton, a British dental researcher, became dean of the Otago Dentistry School in 2015. Since arriving he has overseen the soon to be completed rebuilding of the dental school facilities.

"I relish a new challenge and it is a privilege to lead the division through what I believe is going to be a period of unprecedented change with significant infrastructure projects being developed alongside a new hospital planned for Dunedin,'' Prof Brunton said.

Vice-Chancellor Harlene Hayne said Prof Brunton had reinforced Otago's reputation for dental research, education and healthcare, and had shown himself to be an outstanding leader.

"I am looking forward to him continuing this work in the Division of Health Sciences,”  she said.

Prof Crampton said he was leaving the school of medicine in safe hands.

"I am confident he will find the role as enjoyable, interesting and rewarding as I have.''

Prof Crampton will remain dean until Prof Brunton has appointed his successor.

Prof Crampton will continue work at the University of Otago after stepping down as dean, as a teacher and researcher.
