Dressed to impress at the University of Otago's 150th Anniversary Gold Ball are (clockwise from back left), Benji Ahdar, Ben Harris, Rosie Ward, Laura Graham, Levi Salmon, Phoebe Earnshaw, Molly Nydam and Matt Sproule.

About 250 guests attended the "town and gown" event on Saturday in the Dunedin Town Hall, including members of the Dunedin City Council as well as University of Otago vice-chancellor Prof Harlene Hayne.

University 150th project co-ordinator Kerry Buchan described the ball as a spectacular evening, the warm atmosphere making a welcome contrast to the cool weather outside.

"The food was amazing, the company was amazing, and the musicians were amazing," she said.

It was encouraging to see people of all ages take to the dance floor for a line-up of local musicians.

The evening was deliberately speech-free but included a three-course dinner and anniversary cake.

Ms Buchan said the ball had gone so well organisers were discussing making it an annual event.
