A Chinese national now faces a charge of dangerous driving causing death, following a crash that killed Dunedin photographer Riley Baker.

Limin Ma (41), of Shanghai, was granted a registrar's adjournment when the matter was called in the Dunedin District Court this morning.

Mr Baker was killed when the motorcycle he was riding collided with a car on State Highway 1, about 400m north of the Shag Point turn-off in East Otago, about 4.30pm on Saturday.

The 26-year-old was taken to Dunedin Hospital in a critical condition and died as a result of his injuries yesterday morning.

Ma had initially been charged with dangerous driving causing injury, but now faces one count of dangerous driving causing death. Police said another charge was likely to be laid.

Police said, at the time of the crash, early indications suggested that Mr Baker's motorcycle was hit when the car crossed the centre line into his path to enter a layby on a straight stretch of road.

Mr Baker won the 2016 Otago Wildlife Photography Exhibition Photographer of the Year, beating nearly 2000 entries with Fernbird calling, a photo taken at Orokonui Ecosanctuary.

Ma was due to reappear in court on August 23.
