Robbery accused appears in court weeping

The 28-year-old woman charged over two armed incidents in St Kilda last week spent the weekend in custody away from her child.

The  woman, who was granted interim name suppression, stood with her hand over her mouth and with tears rolling down her cheeks during a brief appearance in the Dunedin District Court on Saturday.

Duty solicitor Noel Rayner told the court the woman would be making an application for bail when she could appear in front of a judge.

Her case was heard by justices of the peace Warrick Reid and Helen Meiklejohn, who granted her interim name suppression and held her in custody until her next appearance tomorrow.

"I can indicate she’s very anxious to be granted bail," Mr Rayner said.

"She has a child and is very keen to get back home."

The woman was arrested by Dunedin police on Friday and charged with aggravated robbery and assault with intent to rob.

The count of aggravated robbery relates to the robbery of takeaway restaurant Tandooree Garden in Prince Albert Rd where $20 was taken at knife-point on Wednesday.

The second count relates to the attempted robbery of the Sai Food Market on Thursday when the dairy’s owner fled the shop after a knife was presented at her.

Nothing was taken.

Prosecutor Senior Sergeant Malcolm Greig did not oppose interim suppression.

"They are very serious offences that this young lady has been charged with," he said.

"But there will be underlying factors that are concerned with her offending. She’s 28 and has never appeared before the court previously.

"Something’s going on."

The woman sobbed as she was informed she would remain in custody.

"I haven’t even spoken to my lawyer yet," she yelled as she was led away.
