More wild weather for South; 'atmospheric river' on way

Some more wild spring weather is on the way for the South as an active front moves up the country over the weekend.

MetService said the front, preceded by a strong north to northwest flow, would move up the South Island during Sunday.

MetService meteorologist Ciaran Doolin said it would bring "extensive rain with heavy falls in the west, before becoming stationary over the central part of the country into the coming working week".

Earth Sciences New Zealand, formerly Niwa, meanwhile is warning that an "atmospheric river" will transport water vapour from the tropics to our islands next week, causing heavy rain, particularly for the North Island.

MetService has issued a slew of severe weather advisories covering much of the South Island, including for heavy rain for parts of Otago and Southland, and for strong winds for almost all areas in the South.

MetService says the rain could cause surface flooding and slips, while the strong winds could cause damage to trees, powerlines, and unsecured structures.
