Searching for a damaged Volvo

Police are seeking a driver who fled from a Dunedin property on Sunday morning after crashing a car into a brick and wood fence on the corner of Reid and Macandrew Rds.

Constable Peter Bevin said the car, a late-model silver vehicle, was bound to have ``substantial damage'' to its front.

A Volvo badge had been left at the scene.

Property owner Jill Hill could not believe it when she returned home and found her fence demolished.

She said the fence had not only been broken but pieces of brick had been scattered across the front of her property.

``Whoever hit it has hit it with huge force,'' she said.

She said a man who saw the accident told her the driver failed to take the corner, hit the wall, then reversed and took off after the crash.

``[The witness] thought that the front of it [the car] was munted.''

She said the fence would be expensive to replace, and the flying debris had damaged her garden, causing her to lose plants.

``I am angry, it's very disappointing,'' she said.

Since the driver had taken off she was very doubtful he or she would ``be honest and 'fess up''.

However she hoped someone who spotted a ``silver Volvo with very real damage to the front'' might come forward.

It was not known whether anyone else was in the car.
