East Taieri Church facilitator Joy Davis has announced her intention to stand for the Mosgiel Taieri Community Board in the local government elections.

"I've been an active church member for most of my life and I've also been an active community member way longer than that,'' Mrs Davis said.

"Playcentre, PTAs, boards of trustees, just about any group I've been involved in, I seem to end up on a committee.''

Mrs Davis said if people wanted to change things, they needed to get involved.

At publication time, she had not officially registered her nomination.

"I don't believe you can change things from looking on the outside and talking about it.

"You need to get involved and work positively from the inside to bring change.''

The retention of the community board following the recent representation review meant Mosgiel people should get involved in the process of electing their representatives and helping to advance the area, Mrs Davis said.

She saw the board as a vehicle for community development and closer engagement with the Dunedin City Council for "positive action here on the Taieri''.

Asked what the key issues were for Mosgiel going into the local body elections, which will take place on October 8, Mrs Davis said continued advocacy for the development of the proposed Mosgiel pool complex and helping to connect people new to the area with what was available in Mosgiel were top of mind.

Working towards the goal of connecting newcomers to the area would involve collaboration with multiple community organisations and not just the community board acting as the sole driver, she said.

"There's plenty of resources in our community if we can work together to build this resilience and build this connectedness.

"It might not be that the community board does it all but the community board endorses and supports other groups, like the [Mosgiel] Business Association or the [Taieri] Parents Centre or the high school [Taieri College] in an initiative that they're doing.''

Mrs Davis said her experience in co-ordinating the Mosgiel Resource Group, which meets once a month, was an example of her skills in this area.

In other community board news, Keith McFadyen and Leanne Stenhouse have formally registered an intention to stand for the Saddle Hill Community Board and Joan Wilson has registered to stand for the Strath Taieri Community Board.
