Armed police honed in on a Dunedin man after he was allegedly spotted carrying a firearm while inside his vehicle.
A police spokeswoman said the 53-year-old man was arrested shortly after 11.15am.
Officers hunting the man converged on an address near the Dowling St steps shortly before noon.
Police called for him to come out and when the suspect emerged he was told to lie face down on the ground.
Armed police surrounded him before he was handcuffed and taken away in a police car.
He was charged with presenting object like firearm/restricted weapon, and would appear in Dunedin District Court tomorrow.
