The council is staying tight-lipped over a ‘‘major event’’ proposed for Dunedin being discussed behind closed doors today.

In the non-public section of today’s Dunedin City Council meeting, elected members will consider a ‘‘major event proposal update’’.

The council did not respond to questions on the matter yesterday, including if the event was slated for Forsyth Barr Stadium.

It comes after the Otago Daily Times reported last month a mystery Dunedin initiative could be in line for government backing.

Briefing notes from last year on the government’s events attraction package indicated a funding boost of $1,050,000 applied across an unspecified Dunedin event and Wellington’s beer festival, Beervana.

Forsyth Barr Stadium has struggled to attract major concerts in recent years.

Then Dunedin Venues chief executive Paul Doorn was not forthcoming on details at the time, but said the organisation was quite confident ‘‘there’s a couple of things in the pipeline’’.

It hoped an announcement could be made by the end of next month.

‘‘It’d be a massive circuit-breaker if and when we get something announced,’’ Mr Doorn said.

The meeting agenda said the matter was being considered behind closed doors for reasons of commercial sensitivity.

Also to be considered in private today is a ‘‘recruitment’’ update.

The council did not reply when asked if the update related to the hunt for a new council chief executive.

Dunedin Mayor Sophie Barker last month confirmed incumbent Sandy Graham had not applied to continue as chief executive and would leave the organisation when her contract expired in October.

The council received 44 applications for the chief executive role, including three from overseas.

Councillors will also consider a director reappointment for Dunedin City Holdings Ltd in non-public - the agenda indicated the decision would be made public once the applicant was notified.
