A "dedicated champion" of war veterans' rights and former national president of the Returned and Services Association, John Campbell, of Dunedin, has died after a long illness.

During 32 years of service to the RSA, including as national president from 2004-07, Mr Campbell worked "assiduously" for all veterans and service personnel to achieve milestones such as the return of the Unknown Warrior in 2004, the installation of the Year of the Veteran in 2006 and the Government's apology to Vietnam veterans in Parliament, Royal New Zealand Returned and Services Association national president Don McIver said.

Mr Campbell's work was recognised last year with the RNZRSA Badge in Gold, its highest honour, awarded to those who have rendered significant service to the RNZRSA or to New Zealand.

An obituary will follow.
