Alex Jakeway will be following in family footsteps — and he, with about 200,000 others, hopes it will end the same way.

Alex, who turns 13 today, will be in Christchurch with family and friends to watch the NPC rugby final.

The match where his beloved Otago will face Canterbury with all from blue-and-gold land hoping for a win.

Alex’s mother Narelle had already experienced seeing Otago win it all.

As a 15-year-old, she was in the crowd with her rugby-mad family when Otago walloped Waikato in 1998 at Carisbrook to win the NPC.

Now she will again be in the crowd — this time in Christchurch — when Otago will hopefully take the crown.

Alex will have his lifelong mates, Jack Blick and Connor Nicholls, with him (all of their parents met in antenatal classes).

So who is going to win?

Alex should know; he has been close to the team in his role as ballboy for Otago games this year at Forsyth Barr Stadium.

According to Alex, this is how it is going to play out.

"So I think it will be 24-24 at fulltime. Then it will go to extra time and Sam Gilbert will get it on halfway and slot a drop goal right down the middle."

There we go — all done.

Let us hope Alex is right.
