French-born University of Otago graduand Marieke Blondet has an unusual claim to fame, as the first Otago humanities student to complete "cotutelle" studies - involving twin doctorates in French and English.

Her research, which focused on the social impacts of conservation in American Samoa, has resulted in a French version of her doctorate, supervised by a prestigious Parisian university, the School of Advanced Studies in Social Sciences, and an English version, supervised at Otago University.

Completing her doctoral research, and producing two versions, in two languages, to meet somewhat different requirements in each country had been demanding work, but it felt "very, very special" to have completed it, Ms Blondet said yesterday.

Her two Otago supervisors were Associate Prof Jacqui Leckie, of anthropology, and Associate Prof Jenny Bryant-Tokalau, of Te Tumu.

Otago University had been "extremely supportive" of her studies, which had been partly inspired by a visit to Paris by senior administrators from the university.

After completing the final revisions for her Otago doctorate earlier this year, she returned to France, where she recently gained a tertiary postdoctoral fellowship.

Back in Dunedin to graduate, she was feeling "very excited" about seeing New Zealand friends and taking part in today's graduation ceremony at the Dunedin Town Hall.

She had greatly enjoyed her time in Dunedin, visiting Otago Peninsula's attractions.
