Dunedin police are investigating a fire that threatened houses in the suburb of Corstorphine about 1.50pm yesterday.
Three appliances were called in to help contain a blaze which spread quickly through grass and scrub on steep ground at the corner of Stevenson and Corstorphine Rds.
Bystanders were enlisted to help the first firefighters on the scene run a water hose down the road to the water supply some distance away.
One bystander said he saw children playing in the grass before the fire started, but St Kilda Station Officer Mark Leonard said it was unclear how the fire started and the Fire Service referred the incident to the police.
