Mosgiel is being ‘‘terrorised’’ by a flock of small toy ducks that have appeared suddenly and with seemingly no explanation.

From fences to rubbish bins and cafe seating, the strange phenomenon has left people in the area bewildered and bemused.

Linnet Hunter took to social media to share photos of various spots around Mosgiel being ‘‘terrorised’’ by the small, plastic creatures.

Ms Hunter, who works at Mitre 10 Mosgiel, said she arrived on Saturday to discover a row of five ducks placed along the carpark heading towards Gordon Rd.

A check of the security camera footage revealed an unknown man with a backpack ‘‘placing these ducks along the street’’ while it was still dark.

She had seen about 20 ducks in total; on cable boxes, fences, along the footpath — ‘‘on any surfaces on the main street’’.

‘‘I was a bit bemused, it was quite funny.

‘‘I just think it’s someone having a bit of a laugh . . . just amusing the people of Mosgiel.’’

Blend Espresso worker Ally Paterson said a customer found three ducks sitting on their tables outside, also on Saturday morning.

‘‘We just thought it was really funny and really random.’’

The ducks — ‘‘a pink one, a nurse one and an artist one’’ — were brought inside and had found a new home on a shelf out the front.

Mosgiel-Taieri Community Board chairwoman Rebecca Shepherd said she and her children had also seen the ducks, but were none the wiser about their origin.

‘‘We saw little wee ducks that were not quite the size of a normal bath duck . . . on all the seats.

‘‘There was one on a rubbish bin lid.’’

She understood it was something that happened around this time every year.

Those commenting on social media were just as intrigued.

One person said there was a similar ‘‘duck attack’’ a year or so ago.

‘‘What the duck is going on here?’’ another said.
