Why people have guns at all the real issue

New Zealand comedian Jesse Griffin is Wilson Dixon (48), of  Cripple Creek, Colorado, in Wilson Dixon.

Can you describe your show?

It's country music, so basically it's music that is generated in a non-urban environment involving rural themes: dusty roads, fields of wheat, irrigation methods, heartbreak, that kind of stuff.

What is your favourite spice and why?

Probably Scary Spice, although there was something about Sporty that was intriguing. The girl had a gold tooth at the age of 19. That's got to count for something.

There has been recent talk of creating a gun registry in New Zealand. What do you think of this?

Knowing someone has a gun isn't really the issue. The fact that they have one in the first place is more the problem.

How does your home of Cripple Creek differ from Dunedin?

The similarities are that both places are quite isolated and the people look at you funny. The differences are that in Dunedin the people looking at you funny are strangers, so that's understandable. In Cripple Creek everyone knows each other or are family members, so having them look at you funny takes on a whole lot more significance.

Why should people come to your show?

I wouldn't say ''should'', I'd say ''can if they want to''. From my perspective, an hour of country music is an hour well spent, but that's not true for all people. I mean, I think those people are wrong, but I'm not going to waste my time trying to change their minds.

The fact that there are people out there whose favourite thing to do is to stand near some train tracks and obsessively write down all the times and the details of the trains that go past them is proof enough that people have wildly different perspectives of what constitutes a good time.

Could you describe the ideal male outfit?

Socks and undergarments form the basis of most outfits, so I'd suggest those as a starting point. Beyond that it is up to the individual. I go for jeans, boots, a shirt and a cowboy hat, but obviously if you're a Catholic priest, a surgeon or an Inuit for example, that list would be unnerving, impractical and potentially dangerous.

Wilson Dixon will play at Emerson's Festival Club at 20 Princes St at 8pm, from today to Wednesday.
