Garden in focus for competition

University of Otago postgraduate student Joy Maymay practises her photography skills at the Dunedin Botanic Garden yesterday.

She plans to enter ‘‘The Living Lens: Botanical Views’’, a photography competition at the garden launched by the Dunedin City Council.

Ms Maymay, who moved to the city less than six months ago, said she had taken up photography as a hobby.

She considered herself a novice and said the competition was an opportunity to learn from others.

‘‘For me it's a really fun experience to really enjoy the garden.

‘‘It's not just passing by like a tourist, but really [to] look at every part of the garden.’’

So far, she had taken photos of ducks and flowers.

The competition is open to all ages and runs until Sunday.

The categories are flora and fauna.

All photos must be taken at the garden.
