Doing the hard yards to meet camp costs

Having his pupils miss an ‘‘epic school camp trip’’ due to the cost of living was not an option for one Dunedin primary school principal, so he decided to raise the money himself.

Musselburgh Primary School principal Rob Taylor is doing two half-marathons in an effort to raise $4000 to pay for abseiling and other adventure programmes at the year 5 and 6 annual school camp at Berwick.

‘‘Because of the cost of living at the minute, our costs for petrol and food and going to the camp in the first place has gone up a lot.

‘‘We've had to charge our parents more money, so charging this part was just a little bit over the top.’’

He said the adventure side of school camp was always the ‘‘best part of camp’’, so they could not miss out.

It was also the part of camp teachers could not run themselves and involved specialist guidance.

‘‘For our families at the minute, it's just a step too far to ask them for that finance, but this is a good way to raise the money.’’

Mr Taylor managed to raise $3250 thanks to sponsors Simply the Best Cleaning Ltd, KidzActive, the Connor Jones Group Ltd, Pita Pit, Signature Property Ltd, DK Architecture, Cyclone, Subway Andersons Bay and Printroom.

‘‘I thought I'd get one or two and maybe get $1000, so getting $3250 has been amazing.’’

Now that the hard part of asking for money was over, his next task was actually completing the two half-marathons.

Mr Taylor would be running in the Wellington Marathon at the end of this month, and in the Dunedin Marathon in September.

He trained every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.

This past Sunday he covered 20km.

‘‘You do the big distances on a Sunday, because that's when the race is on a Sunday, so you train your body to do big distances on Sundays ... not that I'm an expert, I just follow the Dunedin Marathon guidelines.’’
