The second theft of egg-laying chickens from her property has left Dunedin beneficiary Alena Tromptter angry and worried.
Mrs Tromptter recently had three hens stolen from an enclosed chicken run on her Momona property. Two months ago, three others were taken.

Now, the ACC beneficiary, who keeps an extensive garden and chickens to help her make ends meet, is left with only three chickens and one rooster.

‘‘Shops aren't cheap so I'm trying to do what I can for myself. Having chickens definitely saves money and I sell spare eggs to help the budget.''

Mrs Tromptter had reported both thefts to the police - ‘‘but what can they do?''

The increasing price of pullets put getting more egg-laying hens beyond her reach.

‘‘If they had stolen the old hens it wouldn't have been so bad but both times they took pullets.''

The thought that people had been on her property without permission ‘‘makes me feel wary''.

‘‘If people came and asked, I would try to give them something if they were so desperate for food. But to just go and steal it . . . ''
