A Dunedin hairdresser is setting out this weekend to prove she's a cut above the rest.

Zaibatsu Hair Design owner Jaimee Smith will compete in the TrendVision International hair awards in Barcelona.

Earlier this year, she submitted a photographic entry of her latest hair design that went through to a national final in Melbourne.

She won gold in the event. Two of her fellow New Zealand team members won bronze and the team won the overall New Zealand team award.

Ms Smith is booked to leave Dunedin today for Barcelona, with a model and an assistant, where she will recreate the hair design in her winning photographic entry.

''We get three hours to style our models and present them.

''I'm looking forward to it. At this stage, for me, it's taken me 10-plus years to win this event [locally], so I'm just happy to be a part of it.''

She has been a finalist in the local event eight times in the past 10 years, winning a string of bronze and silver awards.

But she had never won the event to qualify for the international final.

''This year, it's my turn - damn straight it is.''

Ms Smith said it was an exciting opportunity to meet some of the industry's leaders.

''I follow them on Instagram and all that. They're going to be judging me, so I'm nervous about seeing them and meeting them.''
