Majority of submissions favour Mercy proposal

The Dunedin City Council received 11 submissions on Mercy Hospital's proposed plan change, a letter to hospital neighbours says.

The letter from hospital chief executive Richard Whitney said seven submissions supported the change. Five raised concerns.

When contacted, Mr Whitney said one submission was in two parts, raising concern but broadly in support. Only four opposed the change.

Concerns related to traffic, visibility, matters requiring clarification, and questions about the purpose of the change.

Mr Whitney told the Otago Daily Times no-one should be adversely affected by the plan change, which laid the groundwork for a hospital redevelopment, increasing capacity by 5% to 10%, over the next five years to a decade.

He said the submission process was an opportunity for "demystifying" the hospital's plans for concerned local residents.

Those in support included the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, whose submission related mainly to historic Marinoto House and its setting.

It is anticipated the council would hear the plan change request next month or in November, with a decision expected before the end of the year.

The private hospital is seeking the creation of a special zone specifically for Mercy Hospital.

Currently, it is zoned residential.
