Dunedin's Knox College has a new master.

The Very Rev Dr Graham Redding will take charge of the student hall of residence from the start of next year.

Dr Redding has a long association with Knox College. He studied theology there from 1985 to 1988 and from 1989 to 1991 was a warden at Selwyn College.

During this time, then Knox College Master Peter Marshall acted as his mentor.

Dr Redding is the principal of the Knox Centre for Ministry and Leadership.

Before taking up the position of principal in 2007, Dr Redding worked as a minister in two churches, Somervell Memorial Presbyterian Church in Auckland and St John's in the City Presbyterian Church in Wellington. From 2008 to 2010, he was Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand.

His oldest son lived at Knox College from 2007 to 2009.

Dr Redding hoped to build on the college's past and traditions and run it in keeping with the aims and ethos of its two main stakeholders, the University of Otago and the Presbyterian Church.

He wanted to provide a safe and stimulating environment for personal development and study where residents could develop into independent thinkers and good global citizens: ''I hope to strengthen the college in every aspect of its life.''

Knox College, which will be 107 years old next year, is one of New Zealand's best-known university residential colleges. It houses around 260 university students and is also home to the Knox Centre for Ministry and Leadership, a training centre for Presbyterian ministers.
