Mosgiel pool the hot topic

The campaign for a new Mosgiel pool has been given a shot in the arm after the Dunedin City Council was inundated with submissions on the project, Mayor Dave Cull says.

Council figures released yesterday showed the council had received 2178 submissions on its Long Term Plan, which included a $15 million aquatics centre in Mosgiel as an unfunded item.

Of the submissions received, almost half - 1030 - mentioned the Mosgiel pool, although a breakdown of those for and against the project was not yet available, council staff said.

The interest made the proposed pool easily the most popular topic ahead of public hearings on the plan starting on May 11.

Mr Cull said the interest reflected the work of the Taieri Communities Facilities Trust, which had been ''galvanising'' the community.

''There was considerable interest promoted in Mosgiel. There's been a tremendous amount of work done by the trust out there - really good work - so the interest is really, really high.''

The interest would definitely ''weigh on the minds of councillors'' deliberating on the plan, as it had been included as an unfunded item to encourage public input, he said.

The council was not ready to allocate funding, as more work was required, but decision time was at hand, he said.

That could see councillors voting on whether or not to commit to the project.

''I think we have got to the point that we have got to commit, or not,'' he said.

Of the total number of submissions received, the Mosgiel pool had 1030 mentions, followed by accelerating Portobello Rd safety improvements (570) and the city's strategic cycle network (352).

The Dunedin Hospital therapeutic pool was mentioned 35 times, then unfunded cricket lights proposed for the University Oval (34).

Public hearings were set down for May 11 15.
