Parking makes $1.7m for airport in half year

Dunedin Airport netted almost $1.7million in parking revenue in six months after a record in passenger numbers.

The airport reached 1,048,004 passengers in the 12 months to December last year.

It is considering adding 300 more parks and facilities for electric vehicles amid predictions of 1.7million passengers a year by 2036.

The airport's six-month report, released recently, noted parking revenue was up 8.4% on the year before.

An increase in non-aeronautical income had been driven by a jump in passenger numbers.

The gain included an increase in money from parking, an 8.4% hike to almost $1.7million.

Last year's annual report said the continued growth in passenger numbers was behind the now completed stage 1 car park extension, which added 283 parking spaces.

It said the design and business case for stage 2, with an additional 300 parking spaces, was being developed along with options for long and short-term parking.

The airport would also consider electric vehicle demand, and the provision of parking services for such vehicles.

Asked when the further 300 parks might be added, business development general manager Megan Crawford said the airport was still assessing car park capacity following last year's expansion, and comparing that with demand.

The airport had land available, something included in its parking master plan.
