Police stop pursuit due to safety risk

A high-speed police pursuit was abandoned in Dunedin today after a driver failed to stop.

A police spokesman said police signalled for a driver of a sedan to stop at 1.13pm after it was seen exceeding the 50kmh speed limit in Corstorphine between Middleton Rd and Gilmerton St.

"A patrol car engaged in a pursuit for under a minute but it was abandoned due to the risk posed to the public and police by the fleeing driver going too fast.''

Police in the patrol car lost sight of the offending vehicle, which was possibly a four-door Mazda sedan, possibly a late 90s model with a registration number starting with ML.

Inquiries were being made to find the driver and sedan, which was last seen heading north east towards Forbury.

Dunedin police (03) 471-4800, Crimestoppers 0800 555-111.
