Brothers charged with robbery, assault

Two teenage brothers have been charged after a violent weekend crime spree culminated in their arrest on Saturday.

The pair, aged 14 and 16, are now in the custody of the Ministry for Vulnerable Children, Oranga Tamariki.

Sergeant Rene Aarsen, of Dunedin police youth aid, said the pair were arrested on Saturday night following the alleged robbery of a group of young people outside the Otago Museum in Cumberland St about 9.30pm.

The boys allegedly approached the group and threatened them before demanding property.

It was one of four incidents the pair had been charged in relation to.

The four incidents occurred on Friday evening and Saturday, and took place in Pine Hill, Brockville and around the campus area.

The pair were facing charges including aggravated robbery, robbery, assault, assault with intent to rob and demands to steal, Sgt Aarsen said.

Inquiries were ongoing and further charges were possible.

''We have had complaints come to us that we have managed to link to these offenders,'' he said.

The matter was now being investigated by Dunedin CIB.

The boys appeared in the Dunedin Youth Court on Monday and were remanded in custody.

They will reappear in a fortnight.

Sgt Aarsen said it was possible the pair were involved in other incidents and anyone who had been subject to threatening or violent behaviour should contact police.
