The student welcome, which included a performance by the O-Taiko Japanese drumming group, was co-ordinated by organisers of the University of Otago's latest annual student summer school, which began on Monday.
Miss Leiberandt, who is taking a Maori studies paper, said she ''really liked'' the welcome event.
She added that yesterday's warm summer conditions were also a welcome break from snow and -9degC winter temperatures in her home city.
School director Dr Elaine Webster said the event attracted a ''great crowd'' of about 400 people and was ''just a way to bring people together'' to enjoy social life as well as their academic work.
