Students help catch burglar

Quick-thinking students helped police catch a burglar in North Dunedin yesterday.

Detective Inspector Steve Kelly, of Dunedin, said some students were in their flat when a man entered and acting suspiciously.

The man left the flat after being challenged by the students.

The "quick-thinking'' students followed the man on foot, at a safe distance, and called police.

Police apprehended a 26-year-old man and began inquiries to find the owners of the watches, wallets and electronics he was carrying.

The response by the students was "fantastic''.

"Their vigilance has helped us to prevent further crime.''

In recent weeks, police had received several reports of daytime burglaries near the University of Otago in North Dunedin.

Det Insp Kelly hoped the students' actions would result in a reduction of burglaries in the area.

"We're very grateful for the careful and considered approach these students took in responding to this incident,'' Det Insp Kelly said.
