Some race-goers let loose at the Wingatui racecourse today as it hosted a day in the field.

The sun was shining and bands playing as punters scattered around the course for its Melbourne Cup meeting today.

While many were watching the track, some attendees were in high spirits.

In one hour at the course the Otago Daily Times witnessed three heated altercations  between young men.

However, Sergeant Kevin Davidson said it was the best behaviour he had "ever" seen at the event.

Otago Racing Club general manager Rebecca Adlam said the behaviour was “fantastic” at this early stage.

Numbers early in the day were down on last year at the beginning, but a lot of people arrived later, she said.
