A worker watches the demolition of a fuel tank near Ravensbourne yesterday.

Two of the tanks, west of the roundabout by Forsyth Barr Stadium, are to be replaced with new tanks to store jet fuel and diesel.

They have not been used since the 1990s. New Zealand Oil Services terminal operations manager Steve Simpson said the BP project was under way to install new tanks that would hold 2 million litres of jet fuel, and two million litres of diesel, respectively.

The jet fuel would go to Dunedin, Queenstown and Invercargill airports.

The project, was expected to be finished in 18 months.

''It's good to see some investment in Dunedin,'' Mr Simpson said.
