The next stage of the multimillion-dollar upgrade of Dunedin's warehouse precinct - an upgrade of the Vogel St abutment - will start next week.

As well as new paving, and kerb and channel improvements, lighting will be installed on the historic stairwell from the abutment to Cumberland St.

Built in 1883, the bluestone abutment was part of a bridge connecting the wharf with warehouses in Vogel St.

The bridge was demolished in 1977, a year after the Jetty St overbridge was built to replace it.

Dunedin City Council transport group manager Richard Saunders said the design aimed to make the area around the abutment more pedestrian-friendly and increase awareness of the site's history.

South Roads has been awarded the contract for the work, which is expected to cost about $370,000.

Construction should be finished by the end of the year.
