"I think you have to be a little bit crazy to be shot out of a cannon.

"Everyone else who works here says they wouldn't do it.

"And they are the kind of guys who drive motorbikes through burning buildings."

If the thought of being fired five storeys high is not even a stuntman's cup of tea, why does Emily Carne do it? Simple.

She thinks it's a blast.

"I've done bungy jumping and skydiving, but it's nothing like being shot out of a cannon. I've done it over 300 times now.

"I still remember the first time. I landed in the net absolutely buzzing. "I still get that buzz."

Ms Carne (25), who claims to be the world's only female professional cannonball, is in Dunedin.

She is performing in Scott May's Daredevil Stunt Show at the Island Park Speedway tonight and tomorrow.

When Ms Carne is not being fired into a net, she is setting fire to herself - a trick she has done since she joined the UK-based stunt show in 2004.

Ms Carne said it was inevitable she would join because fiance Gareth Routledge was the show's motorcycle stuntman.

"He was on tour a lot and I hardly ever saw him."

So to see him, she tagged along on tour.

And when the show's resident fire man left in a puff of smoke, she stepped into the role.

Despite being set on fire and shot out of a cannon, Ms Carne is nonchalant.

She said there was just at much danger at home.

"I got burnt for the first time in ages this week, eating eggs for breakfast.

"I poked my fork into an egg and it exploded hot yolk on to my neck."

Show owner and stuntman Scott May, who has toured the United Kingdom and Europe for 20 years, said it was the first time the team had entertained in the southern hemisphere.

The team would return to their home county of Cornwall, before touring England and Scotland later this year.

Mr May hoped to include New Zealand in his touring schedule on a regular basis.

"We definitely want to come back.

"It's been a real adventure."

The show will move to Riverside Speedway in Invercargill on Sunday before moving to
