Ramsay (15) is a crack shot, good enough to be the top of the pile at the South Island and then New Zealand trap shooting championships in Christchurch earlier this month.

Competing for the John McGlashan College A team, Ramsay was best overall shooter from about 400 competitors.

Throughout two days of trap shooting, he missed just one target, although he admits he still thinks about that miss.

"I can remember it. I don't remember many of the other shots but I do remember that one," he said.

Ramsay said he had not done anything special in terms of preparing for the weekend of shooting but had shot well and was helped by the encouragement of his team-mates.

He was young in shooting terms, but had had plenty of practice on the family farm in Middlemarch.

For his efforts at the championships he won a Beretta 686E trap gun, valued at $4500, along with a medal and trophy.

Ramsay said the nerves never got to him during the championships.

He recorded a score of 177 out of 180 and said he would have shot at more than 200 targets.

Shooting was about keeping one's nerve under pressure and remaining cool.

He played a bit of rugby when he could but said trap shooting took up a fair amount of time.

Trap shooting was carried out during the winter season and the team was coached by John Fooks.

The shooters had competitions most weekends and the side had recorded its best result at the South Island championships, finishing just behind Dargaville High School.

McGlashan had led for most of the day but fell behind near the end and lost by one point.

The team is dominated by boarding pupils, who have shooting experience through hunting on their home properties.

The South Island championships were followed by the New Zealand championships, in which the McGlashan team was unplaced.
