Body found in Thames lane

A man has been found dead in the North Island town of Thames.

Police said the body was found in a service lane between Queen and Mary Streets this morning.

Police were alerted by St John about 7.30am. An investigation is under way and the area has been cordoned off.

The Thames-Coromandel District Council posted on their Facebook page that the service lanes behind 6 and 10 Pollen St were closed.

Nalin Patel, owner of the Thames Four Square, said the area was cordoned off and a tent erected over the body before he and his staff arrived at work today.

"All we know is that somebody is dead."

He said the service lane that was closed off runs behind his business and is also a busy thoroughfare for buses picking up tourists from the i-Site centre behind them.
