Jail for indecent assault

A man has been jailed for indecently assaulting another male in a Christchurch park.

Nicholas James Webster observed his intended victim over a period of time at Jellie Park before luring him

into the bushes and attacking him.

Webster, 34, also admitted two charges of doing indecent acts when he masturbated in public near Jellie Park and Cobham Intermediate School.

Defence counsel Serina Bailey said Webster had a positive report from a psychologist, who said he had a healthy potential for change.

He was getting counselling and making progress, but was reluctant to talk about his issues.

Christchurch District Court Judge Colin Doherty said Webster had 40 previous convictions, from driving offences to aggravated robbery.

Webster suffered a brain injury four years ago, and was a serious abuser of drugs and at significant risk of further sexual offending without rehabilitation programmes to help him, he said.

He sentenced him to 15 months prison and read him the first strike warning for serious offending.
